Global Perspective on Energy Efficiency

Industry is the largest energy user, accounting for around one-third of world energy consumption and almost 40% of total energy-related CO2 emissions. Improvement in industrial energy intensity has helped to slow growth in its energy consumption. Between 1990-2009, manufacturing value added doubled, while energy intensity decreased by about 2% per year. But industries and the environment still have much more to gain from more sustainable energy patterns. 

IIPI’s strategy is to focus first on some of the most energy-intensive industries – looking at industrial practice and opportunities for greater energy efficiency in these key industries.

IIPI draws on global research and best practice to profile opportunities for greater efficiency, combining:

  • systematic energy management
  • optimization of systems
  • deployment of best available technologies
  • use of alternative fuel and materials
  • improvement of resource efficiency across the supply chain
  • retrofit of existing plants as well as efficient design in construction of new plants

Collecting and Disseminating Best Practices

To support its in-country work, IIPI has web-based platforms, such as databases, fact sheets, tools and case studies to provide information on technologies, policies and financing options for greater industrial energy efficiency.
