The cement industry accounts for approximately 5% of current global anthropogenic CO2 emissions (WBCSD/IEA, 2009a). Global cement production and demand is increasing, with annual cement production expected to increase from around 2,540 million tonne (Mt) in 2006 to between 3,680 Mt (low estimate) and 4,380 Mt (high estimate) in 2050.
