Utilization of Waste Fuels in Sintering

Waste materials with available caloric content (e.g., oils from the cold rolling mill) can be used as fuel, substituting coke breeze. Savings depend on the composition and heat content of the fuels use.  

Use of the waste material may be limited by permitted emissions limits and the existing flue gas cleaning systems, because oils and other organics in the sinter feed increase emissions of organic compounds.

Energy Savings Potential

Energy savings of around 0.18 GJ/tonne sinter were reported from European applications. 

CO2 Emission Reduction Potential

US flag Emissions reduction of 19.5 Kg CO2/t-sinter can be achieved.

Costs

One plant reportedly developed a waste recovery and waste injection system, at a cost of about $25 million, to recycle 180 000 t/y of  various materials. Capital costs were estimated to be $0.29/t-sinter. The payback time was estimated as 0.5 years (US EPA, 2010. p. 15)
